05 April 1965 – Leader of the Opposition

Following the defeat of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party at the General Elections of 1965, Mrs Bandaranaike, who won the Attanagalla seat by a majority of 16, 500 votes, was to sit in the opposition. She accomplished another first by becoming the first woman Leader of the Opposition and was to hold that position for the duration of the Sixth Parliament (House of Representatives), until its dissolution on 25 March 1970.
