Mrs Bandaranaike invited Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to visit Ceylon. The visit was significant as it saw the inauguration of the Bandaranaike Ayurveda Research Centre in Nawinna and also included an address to Parliament, both of which he readily accepted, despite it being at the height of the Sino-Indian tension. Given the closeness in relations between the Nehrus and the Bandaranaikes, Prime Minister Nehru accepted the invitation as the Centre was being named in memory ofPrime Minister S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike.
