Mrs Bandaranaike expressed strong and vehement opposition to the Indo-Lanka Accord that was signed between President J. R. Jayewardene and Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. Spearheading the campaign, Mrs Bandaranaike and her son, the Leader of Opposition, Anura Bandaranaike, joined forces other parties to oppose the signing of the Accord. She also dispatched a letter to the Indian Prime Minister, on the morning of his arrival in Colombo, denouncing the Accord.
