05 – 09 September 1973 – Fourth Non Aligned Movement Summit in Algiers

75 member states convened in the Algerian capital of Algiers for the 4th NAM Summit at which Zambian President Kenneth Kaunda handing over the reins of the Movement to President Houari Boumediène. Mrs Bandaranaike, leading the Sri Lankan delegation was instrumental in supporting efforts of the Movement to tread a new path in bringing economic development onto the agenda of NAM. This resulted in the Economic Declaration and the Action Programme for Economic Co-operation being adopted in Algiers. The development problems of developing world countries which had been identified were further emphasized upon at the 1976 Colombo Summit and the resolutions were submitted by Mrs Bandaranaike to the UN General Assembly in September 1976.
