03 October 1940- Marriage with S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike

The marriage of the eldest daughter of the Mahawelatenna Walauwa to the son of Sir Solomon Dias Bandaranaike, the Maha Mudaliyar of Horagolla, was heldwith much pageantry, in keeping with their family traditions. Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike, who was serving at the time as Minister of Health and Local Government, had first visited her home on an official visit to Balangoda. This had been their first interaction, leading upto their nuptials on 03 October 1940. S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike,having been called to the bar in 1925 and serving as a Member of the State Council since 1931, had formed the Sinhala Maha Sabha in 1937. He went on to establish the Sri Lanka Freedom Party in 1951, and was elected Prime Minister in 1956, serving until he was shot by an assassin on 25 September 1959 and succumbed to his injuries the next day. Shortly after marriage, the young couple had moved into ‘Wendtworth’, their first home together, before moving thereafter to ‘Tintagel’, on Rosmead Place in Colombo 07.
